They were briefed about key messages from the report and how they intersect with the realities of the HIV epidemic and response in Asia and the Pacific. A new report by UNAIDS demonstrates the critical role communities play, and how underfunding and harmful barriers are holding back their lifesaving work and obstructing the end of AIDS.
GENEVA/BANGKOK, 28 November 2023—As World AIDS Day (1 December) approaches, UNAIDS is urging governments to fully leverage the power of grassroots communities to help end AIDS as a public health threat. A new report launched today by UNAIDS, Let Communities Lead, shows that the proportion of HIV funding channeled through community-led organizations has declined by at least 35% over the last decade. To accelerate progress, the work of communities on the frontline must be better integrated into all aspects of the HIV response and properly resourced.

The world can end AIDS, with communities leading the way. Organisations of communities living with, at risk of, or affected by HIV are the frontline of progress in the HIV response. Communities connect people with person-centred public health services, build trust, innovate, monitor implementation of policies and services, and hold providers accountable.

In 2022, the Indian Supreme Court ruled that sex workers were covered by Article 21 of the Constitution which assures every person the right to life. It recognized that sex workers are entitled to equal protection under the law.

Thailand’s HIV response can provide important learning for other Southeast Asian countries, with the experience of having already reached 90-90-97 in the treatment cascade in 2022, on the way to the achieving the “triple 95s”. The country was first in the region to eliminate mother-to-child HIV transmission. AIDS-related deaths have declined by 65% since 2010. With support from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), UNAIDS helped organise for Thailand to share lessons it has learned in its HIV response with Indonesia through a south-to-south learning exchange mission of Indonesian delegates to Thailand.

GENEVA/BANGKOK, 13 July 2023—A new report released today by UNAIDS shows that there is a clear path that ends AIDS. This path will also help prepare for and tackle future pandemics and advance progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The report, ‘The Path that Ends AIDS’, contains data and case studies which highlight that ending AIDS is a political and financial choice, and that the countries and leaders who are already following the path are achieving extraordinary results.
